The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever! Psalm 111:10 (ESV)

King Solomon exhorted us to get wisdom and insight (Proverbs 4:7). He wrote, The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. (Proverbs 9:10 ESV) Wisdom begins with having reverence for God. Understanding begins with knowing the Holy One. To know the Holy One is to have a relationship with him; namely Jesus Christ (John 6:69). Paul wrote to the Corinthians that Jesus is the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:22-24). He also said, And because of him (God) you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption. (1 Corinthians 1:30 ESV) All of the treasures of wisdom are hidden in Christ (Colossians 2:3).

To reverence God, the beginning of wisdom, we must reverence his word. For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. (Proverbs 2:6 ESV) God has spoken to us from his word, the bible, and also through his son Jesus (Hebrews 1:2).

All of us desire to make good decisions and sound judgments in life. We should always keep in mind that in seeking wisdom we need to seek the wisdom of God not the wisdom of the world (1 Corinthians 2:6; 3:19). Our goal should be to see circumstances the way God sees them and make decisions and judgments based on his word and will. We also need God’s wisdom in giving godly counsel to those in need and leading others that God has given us to disciple (Proverbs 10:31).

When God asked Solomon what he should give him, Solomon asked for wisdom and knowledge and God granted him his desire (2 Chronicles 1:7-12). Solomon must have understood that nothing on this earth is more valuable than the wisdom of God. He said, How much better to get wisdom than gold! To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver. (Proverbs 16:16 ESV) And, Take my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her. (Proverbs 8:10-11 ESV)

God’s word promises that we will be blessed if we get wisdom. Proverbs 3:13-14 reads, Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. We are also promised an inheritance of honor. Solomon wrote, By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches. (Proverbs 24:3-4 ESV)

God so desires to bless us that he promises wisdom to those who ask him. James wrote, If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. (James 1:5 ESV) Moses prayed, So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. (Psalm 90:12 ESV)

Do you want to see things the way God sees them? Have you asked God for wisdom?
